Oxygen is required by plants for healthy root development. Over-watering is a common cause of troubles with growing plants due to the flooding of air-space within the growing medium reducing the amount available oxygen. This inhibits the plants ability to utilize nutrients, as the unhealthy root zone no longer functions correctly. One solution is using an Air Stone to dissolve oxygen in the water or nutrient solution. Air Stones plug into an Air Pump similar to those used in an aquarium. It is important that the pump you choose is not too powerful for the size of Air Stone you will be using. If the pump is too powerful the bubbles of oxygen will be larger, decreasing their dissolvability in water. It is also important that the temperature of your water is not to high, as the also makes oxygen unable to be suspended in a liquid solution.
