looking for an cheap set of grow lights

looking for an cheap set of grow lights...i stoped by the hydro shop today and they wonted little bit less then$500.00 for one...
i know that it would be the way to go but it is for my son and i feel that it would be a little steep right now.
the type of system that i have is a 30 gal. 10 pot container system and he will be planting basel and tomatos

How much area are you looking to cover (square feet)?

well i picked up one of those 10 plant tug system's for now and it is an area of about 3'x3'

We sell 400w lights for a little more than $300.00 and a 250w for a little less than $300.00.You can also call us to see if we have any used systems in.Other then that the only way to go cheaoer is to use fluorecent lighting wich just doesn't compare.We do sell them as well.A four foot light with bulbs goes for about $60.00

Adamant,

An area 3'x3' correlates to a square footage of 9'. For decent growth you would want at least 30 to 40 watts per sq. ft so for a space this size you might want to consider a 400 watt H.I.D. system. The type of system, MH or HPS that you go with depends on the spectrum and wavelenghts of light you are looking for.
